What you have here is a part number. That motor was somewhere in the 70's, and either in a truck, or high performance, because most 010's were 4 bolt main cap, blocks. The number you need to trace the history, what is was put in originally, and which rating it had, would be on the exposed pad, in front of the drivers side cylinder head. It will begin with a letter, or maybe two. Yours will most likely begin with a TO, which was "truck only."On the bellhousing flange, just off center, to the drivers side, you will see a code. A letter, then a one, or two digit number, followed by a space, and a single digit. This is hard to see, in the vehicle. Anyway, here is the breakdown, on those numbers. The letter denotes month. A, would be Jan. B, Feb. C, March. And so on. The next 1, or two numbers, are the day of the month. The last number, is the year. That part number, would be in the 70's. This code will be under the valve covers, on the heads, as well. And means the same, as to their date of birth.
Couldn't find that number on Mortec, however 3970010 is a 350.
where can i find a vaccum diagram for a 1985 Chevy truck with a 350 small block
Pass side between the valve cover, and firewall.
Chevy does not cast the block size onto the block. once you see a big block compared small block you will know the difference. at a glance with nothing to compare it to id say look at the head. small block heads have one exhaust port close the ends and two exhaust ports real close together in the middle. the big blocks exhaust ports are evenly spaced and not close together at all. If it is a 350 or smaller it is a small block. If it is a 396 or larger it is a big block except for the 400 which was made in both small block and big block configuration.
It will be on the right side of the block where the head bolts on. with right head on engine the block will stick out a little bit in the front the # will be right there. may have to clean or sand block to read.
GM engine block # 3970010 was used as early as 1968 on some 327ci engines. From 1969-1979 it was a 350ci engine. It could be a 2 or 4 bolt block used in cars, trucks and even corvettes. You can also find these blocks with a "MEXICO" stamp on them near the block ID. It has been said that these are high nickle content blocks and may be stronger than others.
Gonna have to pull the head and find out what's wrong. Could be a bent valve.
The 350 engine was introduced in 1968. A 1955 small block would be a 265 or 283.
Go to search on your computer and type in small block Chevy engine ID and you should find your answer there. Most 350s id#end with 010,which is a early engine, and if heads are off there will be a small hole between the two center head bolt holes. But the best way is ID#s.Hope that helps.
The Motor no. is located on a machined pad on the block, in front of the left hand head. look the no. up at a site named mortec.com or call your Chevy dealer, and ask them to look it up on their computer. this no. will give you the info. your looking for.
