It sounds like your carbs are set wrong. You need to adjust your air fuel mixture screw on the bottom of the carbs by the bowl. You won't need to take the bowl off to get to the adjustment screw. Turn the screw all the way in til lightly seated then then count the turns out. Set both carbs at 2 turns out. When it bogs down pull the choke and if it runs better then you are not getting enough fuel. If it gets worse then it is getting to much fuel.
One of the problems with the 1989 Yamaha VMax is the sparking from the spark plug. Another problem is the leaking under the dashboard.

My sons did the same thing until I cleaned the carb out and adjusted it properly.
If the carburetor is cleaned on the Yamaha Bruin 350 and it will idle but stall when given gas, it could be that the float is sticking. The carburetor may also need to be adjusted by turning the adjustment screw so that it is not getting too much gas when revved.
I had the same problem it run 5 min then stops... i cleaned my carburator twice and now its runs great :)
Make sure you have coolant. Get your carbs synced and cleaned. Those things fixed my problems. Good Luck.

you need to put a jet kit in it if it has any performance parts like an aftermarket pipe or a k&n air filter with a modiffied air box.
Mine had a bad sator. Spray some brake cleaned in side the flywheel and see if it fires. Mine fired right up. Replaced the stator
