When a person who has not completed the salesperson licensing process is hired to work in any retail vehicle sales or management position, it is necessary for the individual to complete and submit an Application Form for Registration as a Licensed Salesperson along with the necessary supporting documentation to the VSA prior to beginning work. Just as a person cannot legally drive without a driver's licence, a person cannot legally sell vehicles in British Columbia without a VSA salesperson licence.

Please note that completed application forms, along with supporting documentation and full payment, must be submitted to the VSA office by mail, courier or in person. Incomplete applications and documents submitted by fax cannot be processed.

Legal Age

As motor vehicle sales involve contract negotiations, written and verbal, it is necessary that all people involved in retail vehicle sales are of the legal age to execute a contract, as per the Infants Act of BC. It is required, therefore, that any person applying for a salesperson licence must be nineteen (19) years of age, or older.

Individuals are welcome to attend the certification course and submit a completed application prior to reaching nineteen years of age. As long as all other licensing requirements are met, a salesperson licence can be issued upon the person turning nineteen.

Conditional Licences

Upon receipt of a complete salesperson licence application, the VSA will issue a Conditional Licence to the individual who is new to the industry to allow the person to legally work during the time that it may take to complete the required certification course and provide a satisfactory criminal record check to the VSA. Conditional Licences are issued for a limited time, typically 45 days from the start of employment as a salesperson.

As a part of the salesperson licence application process, each person is required to submit a criminal record check. Similar to the process that requires criminal record checks for all persons applying for a motor dealer licence, the presence of a criminal record will not automatically exclude a person from receiving a licence to work as a salesperson. The circumstances of any prior criminal record will be reviewed by the Registrar to determine the relevance of past convictions to their work as a motor vehicle sales professional.

More information about criminal record checks is available here: Salesperson Licensing Criminal Record Policy (pdf).

Changing Employers

A person holding a valid salesperson licence who changes employers is not required to submit a new licence application, however they must fill out and return a new Employment Authorization Form. This form may be submitted by fax to the VSA office for any person holding a valid salesperson licence.

Eligibility to work in Canada

The VSA requires that any person applying for a salesperson licence must be a Canadian citizen or have legal status to work in Canada. Those who are not residents of Canada must have a valid work permit for retail vehicle sales.

Medical Leave Policy

A salesperson who is required to take leave from work for medical reasons may be eligible to apply for an extension of the annual renewal of their licence. Medical leave will apply to documented medical circumstances as outlined in the policy document: Medical Leave Policy (pdf).

LICENCE APPLICATION FEE: A non-refundable $45 licence application fee is charged for all new salesperson licence applications. This fee is in addition to the current $150 licence fee, for a total of $195 for first time applications. The $45 fee only applies to new applications. It does not apply to renewals. Annual renewals are $150 or a discounted rate is available to those who qualify and renew online for a two-year period.
