If you want to be a producer or work at a record company you might want a college degree or at least go to a job interview to see what they want. Assuming you want to be an artist, you gotta be good... really good. If you sing, you gotta sing really well, if you play an instrument, you need to be the master of it. Pick a favorite band you want to sound like and find some smaller bands that got slightly famous that liked that band too, and try to sound like the lesser band, then take it one step at a time. Don't get a bunch of amateurs together and try to pull off a multi-platinum masterpiece; I tried that and it embarrasses me to this day; you don't get to be Elvis or Lennon overnight. Record a few songs for an EP, do a few concerts/gigs, and maybe someone important will notice you and you'll get a big break (though that's rare). Practice and keep your eyes open for opirtunitues. Garage band can help you record songs, and you could start a Facebook and myspace page for your band, maybe even put ur songs on iTunes. If you're good and if ur lucky you might just hit something good. Most don't make it, but no one will make it if they don't give it their all. One venue of music I happen to be familiar with is the Wizard Rock movement. It's not something everyone could feel at home at, but it's worth researching it.
Well, many artists start by getting a band together and/or learning and instrument. From there, the would film themselves singing a song (mostly an original one) and post the video on a video hosting site like YouTube.
Managers and people from recording companies are always looking for the newest musicians to join their label, so they can just find you on Youtube and, if you've got talent, they could ask you to join.
