Before any surface can be used for marquetry it must be totally flat and free from dust. Start by using a 'block plane' to remove as much of the wood as possible. Always go with the grain of the wood. If you have access to a thicknesser, use this - it will take any the uneven piece of wood and smooth the largest flat sides. Essentially doing the job of a 'block plane' mechanically in seconds and with accuracy. After planing (either mechanically or by hand) give the wood a light sand with an orbital sander - be sure to be even.
