The answer to this question is about 14 bucks at your local bookstore or automotive parts store. You aren't going to get a safe and thorough explanation on the internet. I would advise you to get the assistance of someone who has turned a few wrenches in his life and hopefully done brakes before.
Or take it to some place like Sears and just shell out the $200 bucks or so it should cost if you don't feel competent to do the work yourself. After all, what would you pay to stop at the moment when you're about to pile into a crosswalk full of dumb kids who bolted into the street without looking, such as I experienced this morning? If I had scratched even one of those kids, it would have cost potentially tens of thousands of dollars. Brakes are kind of important, and mine work well.
