It is very complicated ! it works on hydraulic oil pressure.that force cutch packs to drive various internal gears.The engine is conected to the Automatic trans mission by means of a flex plate ,sonme people refer to it as a flywheel. The flex plate is bolted to the torque converter of the the transmission.the torque converter drives the oil pump in side the transmission this supplies the hydraulic pressure to the various clutch packs as the gearshift slector is moved to the various gear selections.the torque converter also ha a proccess that allows it to dissengage at an idle and to engageby means of internal hydraulic oil friction asthe engine speeds up . there is an out put shaft on the transmission that sends the rotating energy through the various gears and corrosponding clutch packs to the drive shaft ,differential and to the wheels.like i said it is very complicated this is a very simple explaination.
