In Lithuania were killed about 196,000 Jews of 204,000 population during the Holocaust. It's about 96%. On first stage massacre started at the first days of nazi occupation in 1941 June 23 and finished on first 1941 December days. On this stage were killed about 130000 Jews (~75%). On second stage Jews were sent to ghettos (Vilnius, Kaunas, Siauliai) till 1943 June. Then ghettos are liquidating - Jews who can work were sent to concentration camps, others were killed. Jews who survived holocaust was: Persons who was sent into Stalin GUAG's in 1941 June 14 with other Lithuanian citizens; those who were in underground resistance to nazi occupation (Communist) organizations; who survived slavery work in concentration camp.

Holocaust singularities in Lithuania: 96% of Jew population were killed during the holocaust are the one of the biggest percent in the world. This percentage is so big bocouse there were no preparation to kill all the Jews like in other countries - about 75% population were killed 1941 June - 1941 December, Others were sent to ghettos and killed in 1943 June. Such big percentage of killed Jews are because some lithuanians coloborated with Nazis - they were affected by nazi propoganda. The conspiracy theory about "Judeo-Bolshevism" was particularly widespread in Lithuania.

True but I'm lithuanian and know that most of the lithuanians who coloborated with the Nazis vere crimnals and vere in prison during the inter-war period when Lithuania was indipendent with its own government when the Nazis occupied Lithuania form the Soviets in June of 1941 they released all of the political and other criminals in exange of helping them to killing Jews. Also I may mention the part of lithuanians who coloborated with the Nazis vere people form eastern Lithuania where the polish "Armija Krajowa'' was killing lithuanians. those men only tried to stop the killing of lithuanians by polish, but most of the lithuanians who coloborated vere sadistic and recidivistic criminals who enjoyed killing.

It is felt that out of some 93,475 Latvian Jews (1935 census) about 70,000 did not survive World War II. While it is clear that the vast majority of these died as a result of the Holocaust, it is not possible to say how many of these died in the holocaust and how many as a result of other factors, primarily the Soviet deportation of the "ruling class" after occupying Latvia in 1940. Precise figures are difficult for a number of reasons:

  • Prior to Nazi Germany occupying the country, many ethnic Jews had already been deported by the Soviets, along with other Latvian political and business leaders as well as members of the intelligentsia The fate of many of these deportees is unclear.
  • While the Germans tended to be meticulous about keeping records, many of these have been lost or corrupted in the 50 years of Soviet occupation of Latvia following WWII. Soviets on the other hand have never been good about keeping records let alone publishing them.

Even now, Russia is still very reluctant to release any documents documenting Soviet atrocities.

  • Not all Latvian Jews were sent to forced labor or extermination camps in Latvia. The fate of those deported to other concentration camps by the Nazis is in many cases unclear.

In 1941, before the Nazi invasion, Latvia had an estimated Jewish population of about 90,000 of whom about 90% were killed in the Holocaust.

The total number of Jews killed in Latvia was much higher as Riga and some surrounding areas were turned into vast killing fields in 1941, and German and Lithuanian Jews were sent there to be killed.

Approximately 20,000 more accurate number hard to estimate. ____ The Wikipedia article on the 'History of the Jews in Estonia' (see link) gives a much lower figure for the number of Estonian Jews who were killed in the Holocaust. Estonia, unlike Latvia and Lithuania, had been outside the Pale of Settlement - that is, the area of the Russian Empire where Jews were allowed to reside without special permission - and never had a large Jewish population. However, thousands of Jews were deported by the Nazis to Estonia from neighbouring areas and worked to death there.

The term Holocaust usually refers to the industrial scale mass murder of Jews, Gypsies, partisans, intellectuals, and other "undesirables" in the death camps of Poland and Germany, after the summer of 1941. The killing in Lithuania predates the death camps, having occurred during the German attack on the Soviet Union, Operation Barbarossa. This was before Hitler declared the "final solution to the Jewish problem."

The mass murder in Lithuania did not happen in death camps; rather it was carried out by SS death squads called the Einsatzgruppen. Approximately 210,000-220,000 people were killed, most of them Jews. Instead of gas chambers, the victims were executed by firing squad and buried in mass graves.

German soldiers found this method of extermination to be so distressing that the army's morale collapsed and their speed of advance into Soviet territory slowed considerably. This compelled the German High Command to find a way to commit mass murder in a more "efficient" and less personal fashion.

__________

The killings carried out by mobile killing units before the introduction of large gas chambers are part of the Holocaust. Both an unduly broad and an unduly narrow definition of the Holocaust cause problems.

About 96% of Lithuania's Jews were slaughtered. The mobile killing units were assisted by aboout 30,000 local Lithuanian volunteers, who believed that "the Jews" had been responsible for the annexation of Lithuania by the Soviet Union in 1940.
