QuestionThere's no evidence that drinking or consuming more than the recommended amount of calcium (from milk or any source) actually increases height. All the studies I've found on Google scholar seem to suggest that while those deficient in calcium and milk tend to have lower bone densities and smaller statures, those with already normal calcium levels don't seem to show any height increases by drinking additional milk. Those who avoided milk products tended to show smaller stature, but most of those milk-avoiding subjects did not supplement with calcium from other sources, they were calcium deficient.

All of these studies involved young people who were still growing.

24 ounces of milk contains roughly all the calcium you need in a day. Choose skim milk if possible.

Milk makes everything in your body grow, it makes your eyesight better and lots of things strong.

5-6 glasses/day.

The USDA currently recommends that older children, teens, and adults need 3 cups a day, while children 4 to 8 years old need 2½ cups, and children 2 to 3 years old need 2 cups.

UK guidelines suggest 600ml of milk or 90 grams of hard cheese or 450 grams of yogurt. Full or low fat products are both included in the recommendations.

The American Heart Association recommend two or three cups of low fat or fat free milk or its equivalent in dairy products.

Deakin University, Australia suggests 600ml to 1000ml of milk or its equivalent.

Harvard School of Public Health published a somewhat lower recommendation of one cup per day as being sufficient.

Note, however, that the vast majority of mammals, including humans, lose the ability to digest the sugar in milk after infancy. About 25% of humans (mostly of northern European descent) have a genetic mutation that allows them to continue to digest milk sugar or lactose. The rest of us (an estimated 75% of us) are lactose-intolerant as adults, including the vast majority of people who are of Asian, African, Native American, and southern European descent. Symptoms of lactose intolerance include bloating, pain or cramps in the lower belly, gas, diarrhea, and vomiting.

In addition, people in the countries that consume the most dairy have the highest osteoporosis rates. Osteoporosis and kidney stones are from bone loss caused by eating animal proteins and dietary acids. Hard cheese like Parmesan is the greatest source of dietary acids. The researchers at Harvard suggested that foods like collards, bok choy, and baked beans are safer choices than dairy for obtaining calcium. In fact, watercress, tofu, mustard greens, turnip greens, basil, collards, spinach, beet greens, spearmint, rapini, chicory, dandelion greens, thyme, parsley, Okra, wakame, cardoons, chives, endive, cilantro, chard, kale, butterhead lettuce, bay leaves, celery, leaf lettuce, scallions, broccoli, cabbage, hearts of palm, and nori, all have more calcium per calorie than milk. Other plant foods that contain calcium include: beans, nuts like almonds and seeds like sesame, and whole grains.
