Chlorine and shock are not the first ingredients to "start" a new pool. A conditioner should have been added first. It helps the chlorine stay in the water and work. Take a water sample to your pool store. tell them you are trying to "Start" the pool

∙ 15y agoyou did not mention having a filter that could be your problem -sorry i forgot to mention, but yes, i do have a filter. Apparently the suttle hint did not work. You need to clean the filter if it has not been cleaned for a while. Then extend the filter and pump run times be several hrs. along with double the chlor that you initially added. You also have to bring up your conditioner levels to between 50 & 80 ppm. Also, take some lessons in proper pool maint soon.

∙ 15y agoRun the filter 24/7 until clear - backwashing the filter or cleaning the cartridges as needed. Add more chlorine - 2 to 4 gal. for a plaster pool - somewhat less for vinyl liner.

∙ 13y agoIts because you have algae. I ususally kill it with a heap of chlorine, because nothing else will kill it. It may be more involved if the pool is cloudy too.

Try a water conditioner, designed to help your water hold on to chlorine longer. Sometimes a non-chlorine shock can help condition the water to help stabilize your chlorine levels. Could be high heat, phosphates, nitirites, nitrates, or aggressive water. If it's cloudy, a little green, a serious dose of shock may be enough to stabilize it.

Although one bag of shock does treat usually 10,00 gallons, that is assuming a clear pool to start with. Since you had an algae infestation, more shock will be required. A simple rule of thumb is when treating problem water to double or even triple shock the pool. Simply put, there wasn't enough shock there to finish the job. Test your water for chorine. Most shocks are chlorine based. If your chlorine is low or zero, it will confirm the need for more shock.

It may be that the shock treatment was not enough to chlorinate your pool enough to keep it stable for more then a few hours. You also may have a high PH level from shocking it, which would lower the strength of your chlorine. You need to test your water and make sure you have 2-3ppm chlorine and a PH level between 7.4 - 7.6 . Then from there you can try to get rid of the green. Make sure the shock treatment is not your only source of chlorine and maintain that 2-3 chlorine residual and PH between 7.4 and 7.6 and the chance of your pool turning green in the first place will be severely dropped.
