Look at a map dude. Florida is more south then almost every other state. Think about it.

- No, it is not. Geographically Florida is in the south, yes, but take a look at a thing called the "mason-dixon" line & you will see it is not considered a southern state.

Yes Florida is in the South. Florida is geographically, historically and culturally in the South. Florida was the 3rd state to succeed and join the Confederate States of America. Over 15,000 Floridians fought for the Confederacy in The War Between the States; the conflict proved to be the greatest loss of life and economy Florida has ever endured. More Floridans died fighting for the Southern cause than in any other war in history. Aside from soldiers, Florida provided the cause with food, salt and other supplies. Her coasts and inlands as far North as Marianna and South as Key West were attacked by Yankees. Florida's Confederate Governor took his own life upon word of Lee's surrender stating that "Death would be preferable to reunion" on the Capitol steps in Tallahassee. Major Battles on Florida soil were the Battles of Ocean Pond, Battle of Natural Bridge, The Battle of Marianna and other including those at Brooksville and Tampa Bay. Just as the rest of the South, Florida was devastated by the conflict and endured Northern occupation and reconstruction nightmares for many years to come. However cotton and agriculture remained the mainstay of the economy until well into the next century. Today agriculture remains the largest part of the states economy and much like the rest of the South, Florida has never embraced the industrial revolution characterized by the North.

Florida has a conservative history in state and local politics that rarely deviates from the rest of the South. Most Floridans, just as other Southerners are Protestants and vote Republican in national elections. Notable Southerners from Florida are Butterfly McQueen, a native of St. Petersburg, FL who played Prissy in Gone with the Wind, Country Music singer Mel Tillis, a native of Tampa, the members of Southern Rock group Lynard Skynard...all natives of Jacksonville, Florida, Ray Charles who was born and raised in Greenville, Florida, Delta Burke a native of Orlando, Florida, Easton Corbin is a native of Gilchrist County, a young up and coming Country singer with a recent #1 hit I'm a Little More Country Than That...if Easton ain't Southern I don't know who is. When it comes to square acre...Sweet tea is served more than any other drink. Of course if heading South of Tampa you might have a more difficult time since this area has been inundated by Northern transplants. But there are still areas that are not part of occupied South Florida like the Southern town of Bartow where the confederate monument guards the courthouse lawn and seersucker suits hold the door for Southern ladies leaving the tag office headed for the beauty parlor. The live oaks are shrouded in grey moss throughout the backbone of the state and the mocker is heard here more than any other fowl..the Southern Mockingbird is the State Bird. Keylime pie and shrimp and grits are staples of the Florida table. And natives talk Southern...some have deeper accents than others but the native tongue is South. Listen to Mel Tillis or Detlta BUrke when you get the chance or John Anderson, a native of Orlando Florida.

Here is one quote I found discribing North Florida...."Northwest Florida folks talk with a twang and invite you in with Dixie hospitality. Oaks and pines, not palms and orange trees, grace roadsides brightened with magnolias, camellias, and azalea blossoms. Restaurants serve fried catfish and hush puppies. This may be Northern Florida, but it's still the Deep South, sure as neighboring Alabama--and much surer than Florida's southern reaches, where influences from the Yankee states hold sway." Walton, Chelle Koster, and Sara Kennedy. Fun with the Family Florida. Rev. ed. 1. Guilford, Connecticut : Morris Book Publishing, 2008. 277. Print. (Walton, and Kennedy 277)

Just as Atlanta has experienced an influx of Northerners over the past decades South Florida has as well but this intrinsically they remain Southern. The land, the blood...it remembers too much. People will come and go but real Floridians are Southerners and are proud to be South. People and places can try to redfine themselves until the cows come home but the truth is a tiger cannot change its stripes...Floirida is a Southern State.

The southernmost state is actually Hawaii, which is south of the Tropic of Cancer while all of Florida is above it. Florida is said to be the southernmost of the "continental" states (49), or of the "contiguous" states (48).
