NO you can not. The crankshaft and rearmain cap is not designed for a 2 piece seal. Must use a 1 piece seal ONLY.
Some cranks are cast, some are forged. Pre-1987 are two piece rear main seal. 1987 and up are one piece. Rod and main journal diameters are all the same.
no ,the 1986 and up blocks have a one piece rear main seal and will not fit in the earlier blocks.gmjim
Chevy in 1977 changed the rear main oil seal to a one piece seal. the older crankshaft wont work.
The Chevy small block went from a 2 piece rear main seal to a 1 piece rear main seal in 1987.
a Chevy 2 bolt main has 1 bolt on either side of a crank shaft jurnal a 4 bolt main like mine in my 1982 Chevy Malibu ss are mutch more reliable as it has 2x the strength and holds up to my hi-rpms! martin Tiffany
I'm for sure that it is a 2 piece seal. You can call the parts house and tell them the year and engine size and they can tell you. Are you can look at the back of the engine and tell for yourself.
You MUST remove the oil pan to change the rear main seal. It's the only way because it is a 2 piece seal that fits in the rear main cap and block.
