The 14th Amendment:

  • allows citizenship to any person born into the United States (that included slaves and former slaves)
  • forbids any state to deny a person his or her natural rights "life, liberty, and property without due process of law or deny any person within a jurisdiction the equal protection of it's laws
  • It ensured that blacks would be considered citizens.

Today, the Fourteenth Amendment is still important because the Supreme Court has held that it applies many of the protections in the Bill of Rights against the states.

The 14th amendment grants citizenship to "all persons born or naturalized in the United States," which included former slaves recently freed. In addition, it forbids states from denying any person "life, liberty or property, without due process of law" or to "deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of its laws

It provided equal protection of the laws.
