While many died for what could be perceived as a religious-political power struggle on the part of the papacy the crusades were important. Europe would not have passed through the 2 renaissances it did (first being in early 12th century due to Norman conquest of Sicily and southern Italy). Europe benefitted hugely by making contact with the Islamic culture and receiving noteable technology and information from it. It was the Crusades that pushed Europe towards the Renaissance.
