John Cabot [c. 1450-c. 1498] was an Italian explorer who worked for English King Henry VII [January 28, 1457-April 21, 1509]. His Italian name tends to be given as Giovanni Caboto. But the sole record on which his signature appears gives his name as 'Zuan Chabotto'. The first name of 'Zuan' is a Venetianism.
Cabot was a Venetian citizen by 1476. But his sons believed Genoa to have been their father's birthplace. Because of heavy debts, Cabot left Venice for Spain in 1488. In Spain, he called himself 'Juan Caboto'.
By mid-1495, Cabot was in England, where he was given royal patents for exploratory voyages out of the port of Bristol. He was reputed to have found a new land on which he and his ship 'Mathew' made landfall on June 24, 1497. He was scheduled for a second expedition on February 1498. There have been conflicting interpretations from the historical record as to whether Cabot was lost at sea on the second voyage or whether he returned after two years. The governments of Canada and of the United Kingdom recognize Cape Bonavista on the island of Newfoundland as Cabot's newly found land across the Atlantic.
I believe it is Jean Cabot (English spelling John Cabot).
The Italian explorer and cartographer that worked at the service of Spain was called Amerigo Vespucci, he was the first one that established that the new territories were not part of the India's, as Columbus believed, but instead an completely new place.
Giovanni Caboto is the name of the Italian explorer who landed in Newfoundland, Canada, but thought that he had found Cathay. The Italian-born explorer in question, known as John Cabot to English-speakers, landed in present-day Canada's northeastern extension even though he thought that he had reached ancient China. The pronunciation of the explorer's name will be "djo-VAN-nee ka-BO-to" in Italian.
