_________________________________________________ It depends on what period you are looking at. In 1919, after the third Anglo-Afghan war (between the British who were occupying India) Afghanistan declared its independence and became an official nation-state. In 1893 (I think) The Durand Treaty was signed which partitioned off nearly half of the Pashtun population (the dominant group know as the "true Afghans" who were also the ruling party). This created what is now known as Pakistan. In the early 1950s tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan--over whether or not the Pashtun tribes in the North West Territories of Pakistan should form their own country known as Pushtunistan--caused the borders to close between trade, and the embassies were attacked. The closed borders nearly crippled Afghanistan's economy because of a reliance on Pakistan's access to the Indian ocean for trade, and led to a heavy reliance on the Soviet Union. In the mid 60's and 70's the mechanization of agriculture revolutionized society and the tribal structure--especially the disappearance of the tribal khans In 1973 former premier Daoud launched a coup, with the help of the PDPA (People's Democratic Republic of Afghanistan--a soviet-friendly/communist group) and overthrew the monarchy, claiming Afghanistan as a republic (He was later removed and killed by the Soviets because he refused to be their puppet) In 1979 the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. A huge, and unexpected resistance movement arose, made of multiple factions and Islamic groups. At this point the U.S. and bin Ladin were on the same side (he was a figure in the resistance). After the Soviet withdraw in 1989 civil war broke out because there was nothing left to unite the various factions. The Taliban, a fundamentalist group from the resistance arose from the civil war claiming peace and order, and swept in, neutralizing any resistance with very little bloodshed, The Taliban fell in 2001, due to U.S. involvement. In 2005 women voted for the first time Now one of the major issues is the illegal drug trade due to the impoverished economy from war and the encouragement from the Taliban (who gain a 20% tax on the smuggled drugs)
