Although this is a rather subjective question, some of the more notable cities are Providence, Newport and Pawtucket. Providence is the capital and downtown (now referred to as down city) boasts several different theaters, playhouses, Kennedy plaza, as well as being home to Brown University, Providence College and Rhode Island College.

Newport is famous for its summer home mansions, the International Tennis Hall of Fame and Newport Yachting center, which occassionally hosts the America's Cup race.

Pawtucket was a major mill city and is home to Slater Mill, one of the first major textile mills in the United States.

There are a total of 39 cities and town in Rhode Island several of which include one or more historic townships and villages (Like Nooseneck Village). They are:
