There are 192 permanent members, encompassing most of the world's sovereign states.

There are a select few independent states that are not, including the Holy See, Taiwan and the PA. The Holy See, Palestinian Authority and a variety of UNOs, hold observer status within the UN.

All 192 members sit in the UN's General Assembly.

5 of these are permanent members of the Security Council. They are joined by 10 others on two year terms.
