James Monroe (April 28, 1758 - July 4, 1831) was the fifth President of the United States (1817-1825). His administration was marked by the acquisition of Florida (1819); the Missouri Compromise (1820), in which Missouri was declared a slave state; the admission of Maine in 1820 as a free state; and the profession of the Monroe Doctrine (1823), declaring U.S. opposition to European interference in the Americas, as well as breaking all ties with France remaining from the War of 1812.

James Monroe was arguably the most experienced and judicious man who has ruled this nation. James Monroe was born on April 28, 1758 in Westmoreland County, Virginia to Spence and Elizabeth Monroe. Monroe attended College of William and Mary, where he studied to be a lawyer, and graduated in 1776 at age 18.

Colonel James Monroe served in the Continental Army from 1775-1780. After his time in the army was over, he served he was appointed military commissioner of Virginia, and later was part of the Continental Congress. Throughout his political career, he served as the Senator of Virginia, Governor of Virginia, Ambassador to France, Secretary of State, Secretary of War, and eventually, the 5th president of the United States.

James Monroe was 58 years old and was married with three children by the time he became president in 1817. He served two full terms and was a member of the Democratic - Republican Party. Monroe helped negotiated part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1804 and encouraged us to keep our heads held high during the Panic of 1819, which was the United States first economic crisis. In 1829 he settled the Missouri Compromise and wrote the Monroe Doctrine, in 1823. During his presidency five new states had joined the Union, which were Mississippi, Illinois, Alabama, Maine, and Missouri and twenty-five percent of the American population was living west of the Appalachians by 1820.

The Monroe Doctrine was the biggest accomplishment of Monroe's term. It was a doctrine that told Europe to stay out of the Western Hemisphere, and our domestic affairs, and if they didn't, we would see it as a threat and retaliate in defense. It has kept Europeans and others from invading the Western Hemisphere since it was constructed and continues to keep our domestic and foreign affairs separate.

Another significant event in Monroe's presidency was the Missouri Compromise. Before Missouri, there was an even number of free and slave states. When Missouri entered the union, nobody knew what it was supposed to be, because the government didn't want to disrupt the balance, so they let Missouri choose what it wanted to be, and it chose to be a slave state.

President James Monroe died on March 4, 1825. He was a great man and will continue to be acknowledged for his great success throughout history
