This is a reference to Habakkuk 2:4b, "the righteous will live by his faith" (quoted in Romans 1:17). This verse was influential for Martin Luther's life by persuading him that salvation was based on faith alone, not works. The Catholic church of that day held that people were justified by faith and works--that good deeds were necessary to earn one's way to heaven. Martin Luther used this verse to say that it is faith alone that justifies us. This is a faith in the blood of Jesus, the belief that he died and rose from the dead, a faith that acknowledges the Lordship of Jesus over one's own life.

I have heard justification described as "just as if I'd never sinned." Essentially, it allows us to no longer be condemned before God because of our sins. Sins are paid for through Jesus. The justification occurs through the faith because that is how the justification is "applied" to individuals--through their faith in Jesus.

Similarly, Ephesians 2:8-9 says, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast."

The idea is that salvation is a work that is completely of God--he does the justifying work, and he provides the faith. Jesus' death covers it all. This does not mean that works do not follow genuine faith, because James 2:26 says, "As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead." So true faith is accompanied by works, but it is not the works that save a person. People are justified by faith.

The salvation that Jesus purchased for mankind is received through faith and this faith is a gift from God, who bestows on those who believe the gift of salvation. Freedom from the penalty of sin.

Ephesians 2:8-9 Paul writes that " it is by grace through faith that you have been saved, it is the gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast."

Ephesians 2:10 tells us that "we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared before hand."

So we are saved by grace through faith to do good works that God has prepared for all who come to Him.

Justification, in Christian theology, is God's act of removing the guilt and penalty of sin while at the same time declaring a sinner righteous through Christ's atoning sacrifice. In Protestantism, righteousness from God is viewed as being credited to the sinner's account through faith alone, without works.

What was the catholic doctrine on justification by faith defined by the council of Trent and how did it differ from the views of Luther and Calvin?

The Council of Trent affirmed that faith and good works are both necessary for salvation. This differed from the views of Luther and Calvin, who believed in justification by faith alone, without the need for good works. Luther and Calvin emphasized faith as the sole means of salvation, rejecting the idea that good works played a role in justification.

The religion that believes in the idea of justification by faith is?

Christianity. Various denominations within the Kingdom will argue about what it takes, exactly-word for word to be saved. James argues " What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can faith save him?" The answer is no. " As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead." When James says a person is not justified by faith alone, he means that a person is not justified by mental assent alone. As such, he says, " Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do. You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that and shudder."
