For the most part slaves were assigned to work the large cotton plantations in the South. Slaves in Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland and Delaware were also basically farm workers. Some however had household duties. Slavery was a mess inherited from the colonies and should have been abolished when the Confederation existed and/or when the US Constitution was being formed. Huge error not to have done that.
