The official flag of Canada (the Maple Leaf flag) was adopted in 1965, replacing the previously-used design of the Canadian Red Ensign.

In 1921, King George V proclaimed the official colors of Canada as red, from Saint George's Cross, and white, from the French royal emblem since King Charles VII.

The red represents strength and valor (the blood of patriots), and the white represents purity (the ideals of the nation).
The white means peace and honesty the red means hardiness, bravery, strength & valour.

* According to Ancient and Heraldic traditions much symbolism is associated with colors. The colors on the Canadian flag represent the following: ** White - peace and honesty ** Red - hardiness, bravery, strength & valour

I always heard that the two red bars symbolized the blood shed during both world wars. This is a time that most Canadian historians consider that the dominion became a separate nation, as Canada was now leading its own troops into battle rather than British officers. But this has never been proven, although it certainly makes sense.

The colors red and white used in the Canadian flag are the same as those colors used in the Union Flag (of the UK). Red and white are the national colors of Canada since 1921 (when they were proclaimed by King George V on the recommendation of the Canadian Government).

In World War 1, Lester Pearson noted that almost every battalion from Canada included the maple leaf in its insignia, and vowed he would campaign to put it on the flag, and of course 50 years later as prime minister of Canada he was part of the 33-day debate that resulted in the maple leaf as the Canadian flag.

The Canadian government website notes that the red-white-red combination first appeared as part of the design of a General Service Medal for Canada issued under Queen Victoria between 1866 and 1870.

I believe the problem stems with certain sensitivities that exist with the french populace. Not wanting to offend them seems to be the Canadian government's perpetual desire, so there has never been any concrete reasons given as to meaning.

The three wavy blue lines of the British Columbia flag represent the Pacific Ocean, and with the four white lines represent the province being between the ocean and the Rocky Mountains. The yellow, setting sun represents British Columbia being the westernmost province in Canada. The Union Jack makes up the top half of the flag.

The red and white used in the National Flag of Canada were proclaimed the official colours of Canada in 1921 by King George V.

Although the maple leaf did not have official status as an emblem of Canada until the proclamation of the national flag in 1965, it had historically been used as a Canadian symbol, and was used in 1860 in decorations for the visit of the Prince of Wales to Canada. The 11 points on the maple leaf have no special significance.

In 1921, King George V selected the official colours of Canada, red and white, which can be seen today on the flag. Red stems from the country's british heritage and comes from the union jack. White stems from the country's french heritage and comes from the french royal emblem.
