I am in this same situation. I am a Canadian citizen and am about to become engaged to a US citizen. After much investigation we realize we only have two options. 1) file a I-129F with Immigration "request a fiance to be able to move to the use" and wait for an interview. In filing this form comes a whole pile of paperwork. Timeline is not listed anywhere?? Once approved you have a 90 day window to get married. 2) just go and get a marriage licence in either country and get married right at city hall. Then file the same form as a "spouse" and under the LIFE ACT, your request to immigrate to the US should be quickly expediated.

Whether your best friends loves you back or not the fact you have fallen in love with her means you are not ready to settle down and get married. Marriage is a serious matter without complicating things further. It is obvious you do love your fiance so even though it would hurt her it is better to call the engagement off (and no, she does not have to give you the ring back.) To marry your fiance would be only causing her future unhappiness.
