a six grade education and a license to practice. But according to the international equine resource center, the more education you have (like a B.S or M.S. in Equine Sciences) the more money you can make.

No you need not go to college to become a farrier; but you have to attend a certified farrier school [kind of like a trade school]. But if you really want money, the more education you have, the better off you are, and more salary you'll draw in. Go get you BC or MD in Equine Science...It'll bring in more profit. But the answer is no. Just a quick review and a certificate of approval, and you're good to go!

Farriers specialize in equine hoof care. The job is part veterinarian (caring for the horses' feet) and part blacksmith (making, applying and adjusting horseshoes). Specifically, farriers observe horses for problems, trim hooves, clean horse's feet and horseshoe.

Because a farrier cleans and trims the hooves of horses and other animals and fits shoes to horses, they work on farms. They are usually not assigned to just one farm but travel from farm to farm doing their work.

Becoming a farrier in the USA is fairly simple. You can get a very basic education or go for something more in-depth, remember , the more experience you have the better your work could be and the more money you can make.

There are several farrier schools located all over North America and courses vary from roughly 2 weeks to almost a year in length depending on what you want to learn. It is best to go with the longer more in-depth and usually more expensive classes if you wish to be a professional farrier.

You'll be required to buy the tools of the trade (Each school should have a website with a list of items needed.) This is typically the most expensive part of the education process and will require a fairly significant cash outlay in the beginning.

Once you graduate you can join a Farriers society to be kept abreast of industry news and updates to farrier techniques. Unlike the UK where you must do apprenticeships and graduate from approved schools the US does not require this and therefore there can be great variation in how one farrier works to another. You'll also need to establish a client base and an area of operation along with a detailed price list on what you charge for farm calls to how much a trim , shoeing, reset Etc will cost. Usually farriers give discounts if an owner or barn does multiple horses at one time and also for miniature horses as they are generally easy to work with and less labor intensive.
