Here are some things that happened during the gold rush:

  • Some people got more gold which made them richer.
  • A lot of people went there to get rich.
  • A lot of people died trying to get there.
  • They say between 1848 and 1856 about $465 million dollars worth of gold was taken out.
  • They say that African Americans were the first miners.
  • Not only people from the eastern US, but also a lot of people from other countries came to the western US to search for gold.

People got gold from the river.

It would be very helpful, concerning the question, to have an idea about which gold rush.

There were gold rushes in the US on the Eastern Seaboard, other areas west, and then the famous one in California.

Plus, many other countries in 'modern' times have had or are having gold rushes.

Which one are you talking about?

Almost each one of them is historically and culturally described.

And while there were many manifest similarities, they were all different in many ways.

  • Because major gold discoveries were made in Victoria, this newly separated state suddenly found itself very wealthy. Businesses boomed, together with the population, and more people settled further out from the established towns, sparking interest and enthusiasm in exploration.
  • Victoria's newfound wealth was directly responsible for the well-equipped but badly managed exploration of Burke and Wills. In a race to be the first state to send a successful expedition to the northern coast and back, the expedition's leader, Robert O'Hara Burke, made some unwise choices which which ultimately resulted in the deaths of both Burke and Wills.
  • The events of the Eureka Stockade formed the basis for democracy that exists in Australia today. The miners fought for better rights amongst difficult conditions on the goldfields. While they did not immediately achieve their objective, it gained the attention of the Government. A Commission of Enquiry was conducted and changes were implemented. These included abolition of monthly gold licences, replaced by an affordable annual miner's licence. The numbers of troopers were reduced significantly, and Legislative Council was expanded to allow representation to the major goldfields.
  • The goldrush also saw major improvements in transportation and infrastructure. "Cobb & Co" was the coach line that carried passengers in specially-stripy ng coaches over the bumpy roads between the major towns and the goldfields. Cobb & Co expanded into each of the states, performing much the same service as bus companies do in modern times. In addition, the goldrush also saw the development of the railway in Australia, in a network that ranges through all of the states.
  • Another major significant piece of infrastructure was the Overland Telegraph Line. this was a crucial telegraph communication line built during the 1870s, which linked Adelaide and the north coast, attaching to the telegraph cable from Java. This was a major technological breakthrough for Australia, as it allowed Australia instant communication with the rest of the world. Previously, Australia only gained its news about world events from people aboard visiting ships.
  • In an amazing feat of engineering, a massive water pipeline from Perth to the goldfields at Kalgoorlie was constructed. Whilst this was towards the end of the goldrush, it was still a significant event, as it showed the ingenuity of its designer, C Y O'Connor, and his ability to overcome a huge obstacle for Australians - that is, the problem of accessing water in remote areas. Kalgoorlie is still a major goldfield today, and the source of most of Australia's gold for export, but its development would have been severely restricted if it were not for the genius of O'Connor.
