Lithuania is an independent democratic republic. The President is elected for 5 years by the direct vote of all citizens. The President appoints the Prime Minister who is head of Government. He also appoints Ministers nominated by the Prime Minister. The President signs and promulgates laws issued by the Seimas (unicameral assembly) and is also the supreme commander of the armed forces.

The Seimas is composed of 141 MPs (members of parliament) who are elected for a four-year term in one-candidate or multi-candidate electoral areas by secret ballot.
