Be aware that Thos Hollis was a major benefactor of Harvard between 1726 and 1764 - but he never visited America, being a prosperous non-conformist London merchant who supported Harvard's ecumenicalism in accepting all Protestant students.
It's just possible his name, having great prestige locally in the middle 1700s, was taken by whoever was at 23 Union St as a trademark.
But I'm only guessing. I was in contact with Harvard a year ago about Hollis as his brother John, who also endowed Harvard, is my 5-greats-grandfather.

I also have acquired a cobalt bottle with the same name on it. The very old label reads:Lenitive Electuaryprepared byThomas HollisChemist and Apothecary,30 Union SteetBoston. This is not an answer however maybe it can be useful. I am in search of the history of my bottle as well.
Thomas Hollis and Company was owned by my grandmother's family who had the last name of Hollis and lived in Boston. I remember as a child when they sold it, which was some where around 1959 give or take 5 years. I was also told that we were related to the Thomas Hollis of Hollis Hall at Harvard, but I have never been able to make the connection. He never married and a left his fortune to a Thomas Brand Hollis, so could have been an uncle not a great....whatever grandfather. The Hollis family as far as I know has died out. My grandmother had three sisters who never married and my mother was an only child. My middle name was Hollis and my daughters first name is Hollis. Recently I have been trying to investigate this issue, but have no family memeber to talk to. If anyone has any ideas let me know. My email address is Maine47@comcast.net
