* a design or figure that consists of recurring shapes or colors, as in architecture or decoration * a theme that is repeated or elaborated in a piece of music * theme: a unifying idea that is a recurrent element in literary or artistic work; "it was the usual `boy gets girl' theme"
Motifs are general backgrounds or themes surrounding a topic. You could have a floral motif in a house by having flowers in vases, on wall paper, etc.
A motif is a recurring theme in a story that serves to help communicate the purpose of the novel as a whole. For example, in the book "Invisible Man," written by Ralph Ellison, one of the motifs presented is blindness and serves to characterize the protagonist as not knowing himself and being blind to his role.

A motif is a recurring element or theme in a work of art, such as literature, music, or visual arts, that holds symbolic significance and helps to strengthen the overall meaning or message of the piece. It can be an image, idea, sound, or symbol that repeats in a pattern to enhance the artistic work's coherence and depth.
