Captive advertising is advertising one cannot escape from. Ads on Golf carts are inescapable while golfing, short of walking the whole game. Ads on grocery store carts are inescapable since the carts are necessary for the majority of shoppers, and will be seen on other carts regardless of whether or not you have one.

TV advertising is not captive - one can easily mute the TV, leave for a few minutes, skip the commercials using their PVR, etc.

I would like to add further to this answer as the name suggests "Captive" advertising is such an promotional activity which binds with customer. He/she finds a huge similarity between the character assumed in the advertisement. This can be of several types a bachelor watching an advertisement of matrimonial site and how someone got a perfect partner with it. So Captive advertisement may be like that as well

What is captive audience?

A captive audience is a person or a group of people who have gathered in a certain place for a purpose and are provided or exposed to information that are unrelated to their actual purpose of being there. For example, students may gather in a classroom to study physics but may be "bombarded" with soft drink advertising or promotion. People queuing up at a petrol station or at a supermarket check-out are considered a "captive audience." They are likely to stay there for a certain time and are thus "captives" for a while. Other examples may include people in a departure lounge in airports and sports stadia. Advertising for such "captive audience" is likely to be effective because there is a high probability of the advertising being read or listened or seen.
