The 48 American states whose borders are shared with one or more states are contiguous. The remaining two states, Hawaii and Alaska, do not have borders that touch any other American state. They are, therefore, not contiguous states.

The United States of America is comprised of 50 States. Of these, "the lower 48" all touch each other without any country or barrier between them. However, two States do not touch the mainland states. These are Hawaii and Alaska. These are called non-contiguous states. However, all 50 States are part of the US, are governed by the same Federal Laws, etc.
