∙ 10y agoA "covenant" is a formal, binding, solemn AGREEMENT between two or more parties... like a "marriage vow." In the case of the "covenant" that took place at Mount Sinai between God and the children of Israel, it was EXACTLY a marriage vow:
"...They broke that covenant, though I Loved them AS A HUSBAND LOVES HIS WIFE, says the LORD." (Jer.31:32 NLT New Living Translation)
"Return home, you wayward children, says the LORD, for I AM YOUR HUSBAND..." (Jer.3:14 NLT).
"...you have betrayed Me, you people of Israel! You have been like a faithless wife who leaves her HUSBAND, says the LORD." (verse 20)
The "covenant" in question isn't as complicated as some might think it was, being a "marriage vow." It's a part of the marriage vow that was once a part of the marriage vows of man; a part that has disappeared from most marriage ceremonies over these past decades. It was the Promise of the children of Israel [God's betrothed WIFE] -- to OBEY HER HUSBAND'S VOICE!
"Now IF YOU OBEY ME and keep My covenant, you will be My own special treasure from among all the nations on the earth; for all the earth belongs to Me. And you will be to Me a Kingdom of Priests, My Holy Nation. Give this message to the Israelites." (Ex.19:5-6 NLT)
A deceived world thinks God's covenant with Israel was for them to perform for Him many complicated and difficult sacrificial rites and rituals -- but OBEDIENCE was it. Only to "obey His voice" in a Loving "Husband and Wife" relationship.
"When I led your ancestors out of Egypt, it was not burnt offerings and sacrifices I wanted from them. This is what I told them: 'OBEY ME, and I will be your God, and you will be My people. Only DO AS I SAY, and all will be well!" (Jer.7:22-23 NLT)
"They all responded together, "We will certainly do everything the LORD asks of us..." (Ex.19:8 NLT).
God told them to prepare themselves for the marriage ceremony... and three days later... they were married.
"Be sure they are ready on the third day, for I will come down upon Mount Sinai as all the people watch." (verse 11)
And in Exodus chapter 20, on the third day, God recited ALOUD for them the VOW that they were to OBEY. HIS TEN COMMANDMENTS!
That was the covenant of Sinai. The children of Abraham promised to obey God's Ten Commandments. Then DIDN'T.
"But My people have not listened to Me or even tried to hear. They have been stubborn and sinful - even worse than their ancestors... This is a nation whose people will not OBEY THE LORD their God and who refuse to be taught..." (Jer.7:26-28 NLT).
