An exact toll would be difficult because of the imprecise definition of riot. There is also a problem of who to count in the toll; for example, should you count people who were victims of domestic violence in Detroit during the riots? There is no generally accepted figure, but roughly 1,000 would be close. Some sources give figures of 2,000 to 3,000. The riots were very, very bad, but the death toll was nowhere near comparable to Vietnam War casualties of the time, traffic deaths, or everyday crime statistics. Chicago, New York and Los Angeles (together) had more killings in 2009 than the entire country had in the race riots of the 60s and 70s.
