The short answer: Islam is a monotheistic religion. Hinduism is a polytheistic religion.

Although Islam has several different denominations (the most famous being Shi'a, Sunni, and Sufism), it is for the most part based on a specific tradition stemming from the Qu'ran and the Shari'a laws.

Hinduism on the other hand has a huge variety of different traditions, in India many families have their own set of traditions. Hinduism also has no unified text. Although there are a variety of different religious texts, including the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, it is primarily based upon the traditions of different ethnic groups as well as different families.
