Probably the best way to remember it is, communism is a form of socialism. Socialism is when the safety and living standards of SOCIETY come before the individual (is more important than the individual). Individual freedom is generally regarded as democracy.

Communism will be democratic, with no government or rulers, and people making their own decisions about production and care for the environment. Limited forms of democracy (elections etc) can exist under capitalism.
