ok, first remove the left side of the carpet in the trunk, yes it is on the inside of thr quarter panel. then you will see a yellow plastic box. remove the wires, and pinch the clips to remove the "lamp failure sensor" you see those 4 little slots? , insert a small screw driver to take it apart. then you see if it is burnt, or has a melted wire. if so, replace the sensor, also if it is or isn't burnt, you must check the wires running up to the trunk on the same side you are on. if they are broken they might be shorting the sensor to burn, and the lights not to operate properly. This is the most common reason that sensor burns out. good luck
