The most important job Ulysses S Grant did before becoming the President was General-in- Chief of the union army during the Civil War. Except for a few years of farming and various business ventures, Grant was an army officer.
Grant was a tanners son and grew up working the same trade until he left home to go to the US Military Academy at West Point. After graduation, he received a commission as an officer in the army and did that for many years. After the Mexican War ended, the size of the army was cut back. Grant was sent to California, far from his wife and family and his army career was not advancing, so he quit and went to work running his father-in-laws farm near St. Louis. That career didn't really work out for him, so he began cutting lumber and tried various other business ventures, none of which was very successful. When the war started. he had moved to Galena , Illinois and was working for his brother and father in the leather business. He decided to return to the army and was taken back in as a "Volunteers Officer". After some success as a recruiter, he was given a command, won some battles and was promoted regularly . When the war ended, he was the commander of all union forces and was hailed as the general who won the war. He was made acting Secretary of the Army and soon was elected US President .
Grant became the commanding general of the US Army in March 1864. When the Civil War ended a year later, he remained in this position until he was sworn in as president. When Grant became president Sherman was promoted to commanding general of the army, and held the post until 1883, then Sheridan had the job until 1891.
He was General Grant of the Union Army, and his job was to defeat the Confederate Sates of America, Although the Confederacy was sorely undermanned, no munitions, no shoes, no warm clothes, because the South had the brilliant tactical and military leaders who were well experienced in horsemanship, superb maneuvers and proper protocol for winning tactics, it took 4 years for them to beat the Confederacy. General Robert E Lee of Virginia. head commander of the Confederate troops, surrendered to Grant at Appamattox Court House in Virginia is 1865, the bloodiest war in the history of the USA
Grant went to West Point and was commissioned as an army officer when he graduated. Eventually he left the army to manage his father-in-law's farm, He later worked in his father's leather business, When the Civil War broke out he rejoined the army, rose rapidly in the chain of command and was the supreme Union commander when the war ended.
He worked in his father's tannery and leather good shop. He tried his hand at farming and managed his father-in-law's estate using slave labor. He worked in a real estate office and briefly for a US customs house.

ALL jobs in the US military are military positions, be it war or peace. There are NO non-military jobs in the military
Hanna Simpson Grant did not have a specific job as she was the wife of Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States. Jessy Root Grant worked as a farmer and a leather goods seller before her husband became President.
Ulysses S. Grant was one of the best generals in the civil war. His actual name was Hiram Ulysses Grant. Ulysses is his middle name, not his first name. The "S." doesn't stand for anything, he actually admitted that the "S." didn't stand for anything. The army had mis-recorded his name as Ulysses Simpson Grant. Having won the civil war for the north by beating the confederate army under Robert E Lee he was voted US President for two terms.
Yes. They are called civilian military jobs because civilians, or non-military personnel can apply and be hired for them. There are civilian military jobs both overseas and in the US.
