During the Vietnam War, US Marine's were still authorized limited issues of Kabar fixed blade combat knives, originally issued during WWII. All US Marine & US Army Infantrymen (Grunts) were, in the beginning of the war, issued bayonets for their M-14 rifles, and M-16 rifles.
Traditionally, since the Revolutionary War of 1776, the US military (Army, Marines, Navy) have issued the bayonet. There were two types: Spike & blade. The blade has won out since the US Civil War (1861-65) and has been issued for the 30-40 Krag (Spanish American War of 1898); 30-06 Springfield model 1903 (WWI); 30-06 Garand semi-automatic (WWII/Korean War); .308 (7.62mm NATO) M-14 service rifle (Vietnam War); but then we had a problem...the newly issued M-16 Assault Rifle which was fully automatic with the flip of a switch (unlike the M-14 which required a special tool and a special man to use it), was NOT SHAPED like a regular rifle. When bayonet fighting, men have to hold the rifle using your forearm and elbow and swing the rifle for various thrusts, slashes, upper cuts, and stabs (plus vertical and horizonal butt strokes with the rifle stock). These couldn't be done effectively with the new "assault rifle look." The extended PISTOL GRIP and TRIGGER HOUSING didn't allow the Baseball bat grip that was required for bayonet fighting. But, the Army issued a shortened version of the M14 rifle's bayonet anyway...just to keep an "ole tradition" alive. You can bayonet fight with the M16, just have to practice more and have BIG HANDS. Bayonets got shorter and shorter for each war. The longest (modern ones) were the '03 Springfield and Garand rifle bayonets...nearly short swords. The M14 & M16 are nearly knife size. Only the US Marine Corps issued STANDARD (non-bayonet) fighting knives to all USMC riflemen...the WWII famed KABAR. Unless the Marine Corps has reinstated those Kabars for "NOSTALGIA" reasons, the last time US Fighting Men were issued those fighting knives was in the Vietnam War.
