In the early 1800's, the blacks (Negro) who came to the americas, generally came from the West coast of Africa. Many transited islands in the Caribbean. However, they were not free. They came as slaves, devoid of any personal possession and even without clothes. To their white traffickers they were traded with the same eye as cattle.

It wasn't until the late 1830's that some plantation owners in the south permitted their slaves to congregate together, under the auspices of 'church.' The 'church' became the political underground for the slaves.

Much of the magnificent, woeful, dulcet toned songs sung were about work, suffering, and the 'promised land' - an euphemism for Heaven. However, the Negro slave still had no possessions. Therefore, virtually everything they sang was a capella.

As the segregated church communities began to grow, the occasional instrument would be foot stomping, hand clapping, and loud praises. In fact, anecdotal stories share that it was during the peak of some singing that groups of people (as slaves) were able to discuss and plan ways either to escape, or endure life with a master. The slave 'owners' seldom entered their 'Praise Houses,' as the churches were called. SO under this veil of music, it was the best time to sing...and sing loudly! It was when the praise houses were quiet that the slave masters became nervous and prone to entering.

After the abolition of slavery in 1865, new rights were afforded the blacks. Although exceptionally poor, many strived to obtain an old piano, or a guitar, or even convert a bucket and pole into a base, or a washboard into a percussion instrument. Those unique items began to appear in spiritual songs as early as 1865.

But even today, the purest, most emotive songs of spiritual praise, from music revered today as the Negro Spiritual is still performed a capella.
