Confederate General Sterling Price is among many generals in the US Civil War who gain very much attention. Yet, he did play a role in the Southern cause. Here is a summary of his career:
1. Price spent most of his Civil War time in the western theater;
2. In the early part of the war, he had successes at Wilson's Creek and Lexington;
3. Not long after he ran into a series of defeats at Pea Ridge, Iuka, Pilot and Westport;
4. In 1863 he participated in the failed assault on Helena, Arkansas;
5. In 1864 Price was commanding three divisions and planned to march into southeastern Missouri and capture St. Louis;
6. This plan was foiled by taking heavy losses by assaulting Federal troops entrenched at Pilot Knob, Missouri;
For the most part, Price did his best, however, he has not left a solid mark on the US Civil War.
In March of 1861, Sterling Price led the anti-secessionist convention in Missouri. Due to disagreements and poor communications with Missouri Unionists, Price ended up supporting the Confederacy. He led a Confederate militia group and later in 1862 was commissioned into the Confederate army as a major general.

Robert E. Lee was a Captain during the Mexican American War. Sterling Price became a Brigadier General after the Taos Revolt and was a General Officer of the Confederate States.
On October 15, 1864, Confederate forces under the general command of Sterling Price were successful , and defending Union forces had to surrender. The town of Glasglow Missouri was then under Confederate control.
The Confederate plan to invade Missouri in 1864 was partly the work of Thomas C. Reynolds. He as the pro-Confederate governor-in exile. Confederate troops would be led by Major General Sterling Price. Price began by dividing his forces. One division under General Joseph O'Shelby made a diversionary operation. Price headed west through Arkansas . By the time Price entered Missouri on September 19, rejoined with Shelby's division. Their first goal was planned to assault Ironton, Missouri.

The Confederate Army of the West began with General Earl Van Dorn in command from January to March of 1862, followed by General John P. McCown from March to July, and General Sterling Price commanded from July to September of 1862.

Major General Henry W. Halleck was President Lincoln's replacement for the over-stepping General Fremont in Missouri. In a number of letters to Washington DC, he expressed grave concern about the Border-slave state. Confederate General Sterling Price in northwestern Arkansas was trying to convince Jefferson Davis that with a sizable army he, with the help of Southern sympathizing Missouri militias could take and hold three quarters of Missouri. Halleck, with the aid of generals Pope and Curtis were gathering pro-Union militias to thwart any Confederate threat to the key state of Missouri.
