aside from its own civil war... the Americans fought the british for their independence; they also fought against Spain during the spanish-American war which resulted to the Philippines being colonized by the US; the American-Mexican war, world war I, world was II, Korean war, Vietnam War, the war against Iraq (1991: desert storm), the war against Iraq (resulting to the current occupation of Iraq) and the war against terrorism where American soldiers are now stationed in Afghanistan... i think they also sent expeditionary forces during the 'boxer' wars in china...

Does the United States fight wars for other countries because they have enough extra resources to do so?

No. The United States fights wars either in its own self-interest or because it believes that the goal of its intervention is to save people's lives and protect people's freedoms. Sometimes, it is for a combination of those reasons. The United States does not have such an excess of resources that it feels the need to "unburden itself" on other countries.

In World War I why the U.S not get involved?

In World War 1, The United States did not get involved at first because none of the issues concerned the United States. Besides, The United States had a long history of not getting involved in wars that did not specifically involve the United States. European nations had been fighting for centuries. Let them continue to fight. Also, each European Nation had a specific reason for fighting. The United States had no reason to get involved.
