Blackshirts __________________________________________________________________ Mussolini formed and was leader of the Fascist Party, named after the fasces, the symbol of power in the ancient Roman Republic. The Blackshirts were the attack dogs of the Fascists. There have been many other countries (Germany, Japan, Spain, et al) with a political system which duplicated that of the Italian Fascists, and they are described as fascist with a lower-case "f" to distinguish them from the originators. * Many people think that Hitler formed the Nazi party. He did not. He left the German Army after WW1 and drifted from one job to another. He was hired as a private detective by a rival party to spy on the Nazis, and he joined them instead. In the 1920's, Mussolini was a great inspiration to Hitler.
