Life was hard for people; you were so called 'unique' if you had money. Nobody was in a hurry, for there was nowhere to go, nothing to buy and no money to buy it with, nothing to see outside the boundaries of their county. Everybody did go to town, though the white and the coloured people went seperately. They all had their own church, and as some white people were surprised or even offended when a coloured person entered their church, coloured people not always liked white folks to come into their church. IT WAZ SAD!!

Life was very poor during that time. And the person that really caused the Great Depression was Herbert Hoover. He was president during that time. It was so terrible that where the poor people lived, they named those shelters after him. They called them Hooverviles. It was a very sad time (mostly for the poor people).

Herbert Hoover did not cause the Great Depression, he simply made no action to help or prevent its effects when it hit the US as he was strongly laissez-fairebelieving that the capitalist system was self correcting when left alone.

The Great Depression began in Germany as a result of the war reparations demanded by France and spelled out in the Treaty of Versailles, then spread to the rest of Europe and the US. It was exacerbated in the US by the bad farming practices and weather conditions that resulted in the Dust Bowl. The Stock Market crash in 1929, usually seen as the beginning of the Great Depression in the US, was brought on by large numbers of naive first time investors entering the market and irresponsible granting of margin loans by brokers to these investors.

The Great Depression was seen by many as proof that Communism was a better economic system than Capitalism and that that the worldwide revolution of the working class predicted by Marx & Engles was eminent. The proletariat would soon eliminate all oppressing classes and personal property and wealth would cease to exist, becoming commonly shared by all.

People who held MA and BA degrees could not find a job and were selling apples and other foods on the street. People who were lucky enough to live in a rural area where there was room to grow a garden could eat vegetables from their gardens. Banks failed and people lost their money, leaving them virtually nothing to live on. People stayed at home, sat on their front porches, and listened to their radios.

Bad, the economy was horrible, and there was a demand for everything people were poor and could barely afford food.

To add some details:

Many people lost their jobs or even became homeless. Everyone had to cut back on things. My grandma grew up during The Great Depression, and tells me a lot of stories of how they made do with what little they had and could afford. They really had to get creative. A lot of men who lost their jobs would go around looking for any small job they could find to earn a little money to feed their family.
