The reason the Soviets invaded Afghanistan was because, they wanted to protect their influence from Iran and the Western Countries such as the United States. When the Iranian Revolution started in 1979, the Soviets were afraid that if the rural population in Afghanistan rebelled just like the Iranians then this would inspire their Islamic population to rebel against them. And lastly another reason the Soviets invaded was because the Communist Government in Afghanistan (which was aligned with the Soviets) took power in early 1970s and it was losing it's support from the rural population so it was beginning to collapse and then the Soviets went in to Maintain the Communist Government in Afghanistan.
