Hazarding a guess - With men off fighting in an overseas war, many women had to fend for themselves at home. Difficult as that may have been, the situation helped them to discover their own talents, resourcefulness, and usefulness to the society at large. Once you have found those qualities, it may be difficult to retreat to your submissive role when the men return. Perhaps the society and the women themselves began to realize what women as well as men had to offer.

Women were important in World War 1 because while all the men fought in the war the women stayed back home and they worked in the factories to make bombs, ammo for guns and they made guns. So their work was quite important because if they didn't do it and men did then we would have less men to fight in the war.

Women moved into jobs that were previously done by men. They became railroad workers, cooks, dockworkers, and bricklayers. They mined coal and took part in shipbuilding. AT the same time they did jobs as nurses, clerks, and teachers. Most women also worked as volunteers.
