No one knows for certain because no censuses were ever taken. The estimate is that the thirteen colonies had a total of about three million residents (not all of whom were from Britain - there were Germans, Swedes, Dutch, Protestant Huguenots from France, and others). John Adams estimated that of these three million, about one third were for independence, one third were Tories who were for continued British colonial status, and one third didn't care either way and only wanted to be left alone.
