During the 1700's, the world was in the middle of the romantic era. Beginning in the late 1600's, the belief was in the Great Chain of Being, a spiritual order of life and all things in it.
Geography can only change quickly with a rather violent upheaval- earthquakes, volcanoes, etc. Without those, the land won't change too noticeably over thousands of years. So the geography is more or less the same as it was four hundred years ago.
