Everything they wore was homemade There were no stores to buy stuff in. There was also no restaurants. When they got off the ships from Europe they had to hunt for food and make their own clothing. It was a very rough life. Think about it. They left family behind and basically took as little as they could with them. And when they got here they had almost nothing to start with.
From drawings and artwork of the colonial period, we see men wore shirts with string tie at the neck; trousers with side closures; and buckle shoes. Zipper were not yet invented. Although eyelet lacing (hole with lace through it) was used on some clothing, it was not yet used on shoes. Women wore long dresses to the ground with petticoats or underslips. Outerwear was typically a cloak type garment, with a tie at the neck. Colonists did not bring many trunks of clothing--it was difficult to transport on a sailing ship. Settlers trapped small game and used fur and hides for clothing and shoes.
Although people set up towns, they typically built homes, churches, and important businesses first (e.g. mills, blacksmiths) then schools. They did not have stores like we have today. Over time, "mercantile" businesses started. Mercantiles carried a little of many products, including fabric shipped from England. At the time, fabric meant white, often muslin. Women had to add dye by hand to white fabric, dry it outside, then cut and sew the material into garments. By the 1800s, most mercantiles carried ribbons to adorn clothing and hats and buttons for shoes and clothing. Button shoes were used up through the early 1900s; people had to use a special tool to pull the buttons into the holes in shoes, a procedure that took time to complete each day.
