The first person to actually see America was a Norse sailor named Bjarni Herjulfsson, and the first European to set foot on the 'New World' soil was Leif Eiriksson, who sailed to Newfoundland, Canada. He then traveled south to Vinland (America) and made a colony, called L'Anse aux Meadows.

The first PERMANENT colony was Jamestown, in what is now Virginia. Roanoke, also known as the Lost Colony, was really the first English settlement, but, as we all know, they vanished.

The FIRST PERMANENT colony was NOT English; it was SPANISH. The first permanent American colony was St. Augustine, Fl established in 1565 while Roanoke wasn't established until 20-years-later in 1585. The Spanish were the first European explorers (excluding the Vikings) who established the first colony; the English are second-rate compared to the once great Spanish Empire and their colonies.
