What did Cortes gain for himself or the country he represented?

He gained thumin spices, the formula for making leather, and small amounts of silver and gold. There is a legend that the Aztecs saw Cortes as a white-skinned god, and gave him a magical bird. What is the legend about how the Aztecs settled their land?

The people were called the Mexica. There was a prophecy that foretold that when they finally reached the land they should settle in, there would be an eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its mouth. They supposedly encountered this sign after years of wandering and so settled there.

Were did the Aztecs come from?

This is the second answer-I can't stand people just writing "asdjfkharh;sdsdsd." The Aztecs came from Asia, crossing the Bering Strait and settling eventually in Latin America, after some wandering around as they were defeated, being weak. They greatly respected some other strong tribes and adopted the feathered-serpent god as their own. Eventually they were exiled to an island called Tenochtitlan, where they settled because of an old legend. They expanded the island by making floating islands, called chinampas, which are still used today. The Aztecs conquered lands around them and became very strong and respected/feared. It's lucky I'm having a unit on this :). (Probably I didn't have to say all that but the basic answer is this-Asia.)

Why did Montezuma allow Cortes into the capital?

Because he thought he was the god Quetzalcoatl coming back to reclaim his throne. According to the Aztecs, Quetzalcoatl was king in the city Tollan (Tula) until his brother Tezcatlipoca, through treachery and black magic managed to make him step down and go into exile. The Aztecs believed that Cortes was Quetzalcoatl coming back from that exile. PD: Some people claim that this was just a legend created by the Aztecs to find an excuse for their quick fall. This people say that Montezuma II allowed Cortes into Tenochtitlan just because he was unsure of how to act against this newcomers.

What was the time period when the Aztecs had the reign of power?

HINT: If you only want to know when the empire started and ended, only read the bolded because the rest are only facts about the empire in chronological order. The Aztecs were first nomads who arrived in the Valley of Mexico in around A.D. 1250.Their war god "Huitzilopochli" promised them a legend: "They will have found their land when they stumble upon a place where an eagle screams, spreads its wings, and eats...the serpent".They find this place in A.D. 1325 and name it Tenochtitlan (means "place of the prickly pear cactus")The Aztecs had a social class: nobles, commoners, unskilled laborers, and enslaved laborers. They used codices (books to refer to their religion and history)They made a religious 260-day calendar and a regular 365-day calendar. They built a Great Temple (temple pyramid) to honor their gods Huitzilopochtli and Tlaoloc.Drained water from swamps for irrigation. When Hernan Cortes reached the "Americas", his army not only conquered the Aztecs with their weaponry; they carried diseases such as whooping cough, smallpox, and measles. Much of the Aztec people had died from the diseases and their culture vanished too.The Aztecs were conquered by Hernan Cortes on August 13, 1521Hope it helped- (by Rin Rin)

Why is Quetzalcoatl important in the Cortes Montezuma story?

Quetzalcoatl is important because it is actually said that Montezuma thought Cortes was indeed the God Quetzalcoatl, which legend said would return in the Mayan year one Reid. It turns out, by chance, when Cortes arrived in present day Mexico it was indeed the year one Reid. The Aztec God Quetzalcoatl was a light-skinned winged God. Seeing this magnificent white man ride in on a white horse really seemed to go along with the classic portrayal of their God, therefore really easily fooling the people. Soon after the Aztecs interacted with Cortes, history says most of Montezuma's people despised Cortes and didn't think he was really the God they originally thought him to be, but Montezuma was still unsure and therefore still feared Cortes; and did most of what was asked of him. Angering his own people. Leading to his demise later by his own people. Also interesting is that Mayan legend stated that Quetzalcoatl was driven out of the land that is now called Mexico, and exiled to the West. The legend that he would return on the year one Reid stated he would return via the West from the ocean... exactly as Cortes did. Leading to the mystery of who Cortes was.

How did the Aztec legend of Quetzoalcoitl makes Cortes' conquest of the Aztecs possible?

Quetzalcoatl is a Mesoamerican deity whose name comes from the Nahuatl language and has the meaning of "feathered-serpent". Said to be banished on a raft of snakes by the Toltecs, Quetzalcoatl was said to have traveled east, off to sea, and oneday, he promised to reurn. Cortes, being spanish, fit one of the descriptions of Quetzalcoatl, and older man, with fair skin, and a white beard. This allowed Cortes to easily conquer most of Mesoamerica, and then killing many Aztecs, while forcing others to mine for gold, and silver. Some reports also show that Cortes was given the throne, by the then emperor, Montezuma II. Although all this data has behind it, are letters written by the Spanish, no first hand accounts of the Aztec's, has been found.
