A machine gun, is a self-loading gun that can fire multiple shots with a single actuation of a trigger. It will fire for as long as the trigger is held pulled or pressed or until the ammunition runs out. Machine guns are also called automatic guns, or fully automatic, to distinguish from semi-auto self-loading guns that fire once per actuation of the trigger.

Machine guns can be recoil-operated, gas-operated, or externally driven by hydraulic, electric or other means. Most machine guns have a single barrel, however some have multiple barrels in a rotating assembly. The difference between those and other multi-barrel systems such as volley guns is that only one barrel fires at a time.

Since its creation, the machine gun has developed from big and heavy to small and light.

There were technically machines since at least the 1700s, but the ones that were actually used were basically shaped as artillery pieces with multiple barrels (ex: The gatling gun was used in the American-Spanish war)

It started off as an actual machine gun as a weapon with two wooden handles,a round barrell and a bipod stand.

This was made by Hiram Maxim in the mid 1800s, he named his gun "the Maxim Machine Gun". It was reported to have shot over 600 rounds per minute.

machine guns often have similar characteristics:

1: Operated by a series of mechanics and such

2: Can shoot more than current standard rifles of their time

3: Modern ones are often gas-cooled

First machine gun was the Mp44. Also labled as the sturmgewehr by Adolf Hitler himself.

The Mp44 was used secretly behind Adolfs back after he denied production of them.

Adolf later found out his troops were using the Mp44 when he was making his rounds at a military camp, and he asked his men what they needed more of. And they replied more Mp44's. The word stermhewehr translates to storm rifle "To storm enemies position"

Other names for Mp44 are.. Mp43, Stg-44, and sturmgewehr

Machine Guns, like any other gun (with the possible exception of an air soft gun) could seriously harm, and even kill you if at point blank range. Any gun could kill you, so, yes. a machine gun is powerful.

Why was the 45 cal rifle used in World War 2?

The .45 Thompson sub-machine gun and M3 sub machine gun (grease gun) were used in WW2, Korea, and Vietnam War. A sub-machine gun is called a SUB machine gun because it uses "pistol" ammunition. The M3 sub-machinegun looked exactly like a grease gun; hence the name.
